Barrett School was built in 1959. It was named after Harry McWhirter Barrett.
Harry Barrett was a teacher and a administrator in the Denver Public Schools for 20 years back in the early 1900's. When Denver came under the desegregation order in 1974, Barrett was paired with Stephen Knight Elementary School (now Stephen Knight Fundamental Academy). The students would spend half day at one school and half day at the other. Later all primary students were at Barrett and immediate grades at Stephen Knight. Four years later, Barrett paired with Cory Elementary. Barrett housed kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade while Cory would also have Kindergarten, plus 4th, 5th, and 6th. In 1986, 6th grade became part of the middle schools and was abolished at the elementary level. At that point, Barrett housed all Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade while Cory housed 3rd, 4th and 5th grade. In 1996, bussing was abolished and Barrett became a community school where all children who live in our area could attend from ECE to 5th grade.
Barrett's Mission
Barrett will promote skills for learning, knowledge, and an appreciation of ideas and values so that all students will be prepared to enter society and further students learning.
Barrett is a place where learning motivates students in all areas of the curriculum and provides them with lifelong learning skills.
